Cheap (but Nice) Shopping Places in Norwich, UK

As a student, probably we need to save our money for various purposes:  to travel around UK and European (Schengen) countries during Summer or Winter Break, to buy things, or simply because we must be finances so as not wasteful.

Here’s some places you can buy things cheap,  new goods or the second hand ones:

everything is 1 pound here.  We can find them at City Center (2 in St. Stephen’s Street) and Anglia Square

Here, for some items,  the price is quite cheap, even if we compare it to 99p and Poundland. For example, we can buy a box of eggs, bread,  and 4 pints of fresh milk for only 1 pound for each item.

Charity Shops:

Here, we can find nice  second hand stuff. But, the availability depends on when people give their goods for free to the stores. The stores are in some areas of the city, including at Anglia Square, Castle Meadow (City Center), near Norwich Bus Station, Queen’s Road, etc. Here is the list ofthe stores:

Car Booth Sale:  

it is the paradise of used goods! I found a nice  for only 6 pounds. You can find almost anything here, as long as you are not lazy to dig them up and hunt them down.  One of them is Arminghall CarBooth Sale:   the sellers sell their things from their own cars in a football field.

Seluk Beluk Sewa Rumah/Kos di Norwich, UK

Untuk mahasiswa, sebaiknya di tahun pertama tinggal di asrama yang sudah disediakan oleh kampus, yang umumnya terletak di dalam kampus. Di University of East Anglia, bisa dilihat di bagian Accommodation di sini https://portal.uea.ac.uk/accommodation. untuk yang international student, bisa dicek di sini: https://www.uea.ac.uk/study/international/accommodation

Tapi ada kalanya kita tak mau tinggal di akomodasi kampus. Ada yang  terlambat datang ke UK, tidak kebagian tempat karena sold out, datang bersama keluarga  (kampus hanya sedikit sekali menawarkan kamar keluarga), terlalu mahal, atau ingin tinggal dekatdengan city center, dll, mungkin bisa dicoba beberapa situs di bawah ini.

Khusus untuk mahasiswa yang membawa keluarga, agak ribet juga. Kita ditolak kampus karena punya keluarga. Kita mau ke agensi yang menyewakan kamar atau rumah untuk mahasiswa, ditolak entah karena bukan mahasiswa atau karena ada anak kecil, atau mereka rata2 hanya menyewakan kamar saja. Tapi pasti ada jalan, Insya Allah. Misalnya, mengajak teman atau kolega untuk menyewa rumah bersama. Atau  cari agen (biasanya ada biaya agensi, ada juga yang gratisan) atau landlord yang mau menyewakan rumah/kamar untuk seluruh keluarga.

UEA itu kode posnya NR4, dan City Center itu NR1. Kalau mau dekat kampus, cari yang NR4 atau NR5 (misalnya yang terdekat adalah Bluebell Road, The Avenues, etc) . Kalau yang dekat city center, cari yang NR1. Ada juga yang di daerah Golden Triangle (Earlham Road, Unthank Road, Colman Road, Eaton Park)

Cek aja jarak tempuh di google map. Jarak city center ke kampus sekitar 15-20 menit (tergantung datangnya bis).

Tapi,  agak tricky kalau kita masih di Indonesia dan tidak punya kawan yang bisa diminta untuk melihat lokasinya (atau bahkan diajak buat tinggal bersama). umumnya, landlord akan minta ketemuan untuk viewing. Dan  sebaiknya memang datangi satu persatu, untuk melihat cocok atau tidak, dekat dengan halte bis atau tidak (atau bisa jalan kaki), atau akomodasi gampang atau tidak ke kampus, dll.

Biasanya, sewa langsung kontraknya setahun, atau enam bulan kalau ada kasus tertentu. Bayarnya langsung setahun di muka, atau 3-4 kali setahun, atau bulanan, (umumnya mereka minta guarantor yang adalah orang bervisa Inggris kalau mau bulanan) tergantung kesepakatan. Kalau sewa kamar, bisa sewa per minggu juga. Sewa kamar ada yang termasuk tagihan (listrik, air, internet, gas) ada yang tidak, jadi Tanya saja langsung.

Biasanya rumah disewakan setahun, dari September ke Agustus, kecuali kalau meneruskan penghuni sebelumnya. Atau landlordnya private, tidak lewat kampus atau agensi.
